Encaustic Painting Encaustic, a wax based painting medium which creates luminous color and a lush surface, flourished more than 2,000 years ago in Greco-Roman Egypt. Jasper Johns popularized the medium again in 1954. The process involves the addition of paint pigments into melted beeswax which is applied to the canvas at 225 degrees. A heat gun is used to permanently melt and fuse the wax layers to the canvas. Encaustic paint is highly durable and not susceptible to yellowing or darkening with age because the oil content is low and the wax is colorless. |
